Nature Trails

The Dunes Nature Trail is a 3/4 mile learning trail located within the Day-Use Park where visitors can learn about sand dune ecology, wildlife, plants, and dune forests. You can encounter various wildlife on the trails or around the park.

The trails offer occasional hills and several connecting trails for a shorter journey. Note there is potential for water to cover the trail depending on the amount of rainfall in a given season. Parking for the trailhead is located at Parking Lot C in the summer and near the contact station in the park’s day-use area in the winter.

The other trail is a 2.5-mile trail featuring three scenic overlooks that offers views of Lake Huron’s Saginaw Bay as well as access to a sandy beach and the Pinnebog River. The terrain is primarily made up of sand dunes and forest paths that open to the shoreline. The Steel Bridge Trailhead is located next to Dark Sky Tavern. Campground guests can access the trails along the shoreline.

Birdwatching

Birdwatching is a must at Port Crescent State Park! Bald Eagles, hawks, songbirds, seagulls, and many other bird species frequent the area. There is also a birds of prey observation deck and a small-craft shore access to the Pinnebog River inside the Day-Use Park.

Snowy Egrets, Prairie Warblers, Henslow's Sparrows, and Red Crossbills have been detected. More regular species of interest include Forster's Terns, Great Black-Backed Gulls (which may be seen year-round), and Glaucous Gulls (often lingering into late April and early May).

Dark Sky Preserve

When the sun sets and the night sky comes alive, you can enjoy exceptional stargazing in the park’s dark sky preserve located within the Day-Use Park. The best viewing location is located near Parking Lot D, where there is a viewing platform.

Another popular place to set up for viewing is next to the beach. Parking in lot C will bring you closest to this viewing area.

Remember to lower your headlights when entering the parking lot so you don't interrupt fellow stargazers.
